Room Occupancy System (ROS)

The Room Occupancy System enhances the familiar boards attached to offices showing the current state of that room or occupant (e.g. present / at lunch / meeting / etc.). Using magnetic switches, this state can for example be transferred to a webserver and shown on the personal webpage of the occupants.

The following animated image shows what the ROS looks like and how it works. On the right hand side, the top of the board is shown. Via a magnetical pin, one of four states (empty - working - meeting - don't disturb) can be chosen. On the left, a screendump of a webpage connected via a webserver to the board is shown. It displays a graphical representation of the current state.

The board consists of four magnetic switches, four LEDs and a Smart-Its board equipped with a radio transmitter. The states of the switches are measured, the corresponding LEDs are switched on or off and a data package containing all information is sent every few seconds. The data is received by another radio chip, processed by a webserver and PHP script and can finally be displayed in any browser window.
